Sustainable Bathroom Hacks

Sustainable Bathroom Hacks

June 10, 2021

As the world becomes greener with coffins made of mushrooms, electric self-driving cars and compostable packaging, the bathroom can often be forgotten about. It can be overwhelming, not to mention expensive, trying to be eco-friendly in every area of the household, so we have created a list of simple ways you can become more eco-friendly in the lavatory.

Ditch the plastic by swapping for shampoo and conditioner bars

Shampoo and conditioner bottles can create a lot of unnecessary waste, contributing to the 9 million tonnes of plastic ending up in the ocean each year. Unfortunately, plastic waste is still increasing, however, we can all play a part in turning this narrative around. It’s as easy as swapping your shampoo and conditioner bottles to bars. Not only do they look great but they last a lot longer than regular shampoo and conditioner all while giving you soft and shiny hair and reducing plastic waste.

Use natural and reusable bathroom products

Another contributor to waste can be products such as toothbrushes, floss, cotton buds, makeup wipes, and razors. Not only are these products plastic themselves, but they often come in plastic. This can be avoided by swapping your regular toothbrush to a bamboo one, your floss to an eco-friendly version without the plastic, plastic cotton buds to bamboo cotton buds, makeup wipes to reusable cleaning face pads, and using reusable razors. There are a lot of brands out there that provide plastic-free products and packaging.

Switch your wet-wipes for WYPE

11 billion wet wipes are used in the UK alone each year, and of those, hundreds of millions are flushed, causing huge sewer blockages and polluting our waterways. Wype has developed a specially formulated natural vegan gel that can be applied to regular toilet tissue instantly turning it into an effective, biodegradable, and flushable wet wipe alternative. After preventing over 2.5 million wipes from entering the waterways, Wype has just launched a reusable and refillable single-use plastic-free applicator, with shipping worldwide. Check it out here.

Use natural beauty products

Ditch the chemicals and plastic packaging by swapping to natural beauty products. You can do this by using eco-friendly deodorants, perfumes, body sprays and moisturisers. You can also get creative and make bath salts, soap or body scrub. By doing this, you are using natural products and skipping the waste of packaging these products can come in.

Homemade Coffee Scrub Recipe:

  • 1 cup ground coffee
  • 1 cup sugar or salt
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (optional)

  1. Melt coconut oil and allow it to cool but not solidify
  2. Mix all ingredients and store in an airtight container or mason jar

Be water smart

The average family can waste 180 gallons of water per week. This unnecessary waste can be fixed simply by becoming aware of it and creating small habits that help reduce this.

This can be done by turning the tap off while brushing your teeth or shaving which can save 8 gallons of water per day. Ever heard of the saying ‘if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down’?, I’m sure you get this one. Another one is making sure the tap is turned off properly can also save water, in New Zealand, there are 101 billion litres of water being leaked or wasted every year. Finally, chuck a bucket in your shower while you’re waiting for the water to turn hot, you can then use this to water your plants.

Repurpose jars

When you’re finished with a jar, instead of throwing it in the recycling bin, repurpose them and use them as holders. You can get creative with these by painting and decorating them and keeping bathroom products in them such as your toothbrush, tooth floss, razors or cotton buds.

Wash your towels less

A great way to save water is by washing your towels less. You may think you need to wash your towels after every wash, but you don’t, so hang it up and reuse it instead. According to the Cleaning Institute, towels only need to be washed after every third “normal” use.

Go tree-free on the TP

With over 27,000 trees being flushed down the loo every single day, smartass wanted to produce toilet paper from a material that would have as little impact on our environment as possible and completely remove the need for cutting down trees. Smartass is made from a combination of Bamboo and Bagasse, two of the world's most sustainable resources.

The benefits of Bamboo is that it’s fast-growing, has a simple ‘diet’ of rainwater and sunshine, and it has little wear and tear on soil quality. We then teamed this with Bagasse, which is a waste product from the sugarcane harvesting process – Name a better duo!

As a Toitū Carbon Zero certified organisation, you can be sure all carbon from shipping is being tracked, managed and offset by investing in planting initiatives and installing solar energy stations around the world. This means your smartass is delivered with no carbon footprint. Whether it’s Toilet Paper, Tissues or Paper Towels, smartass has more than your backside covered.

With simple ordering and delivery, smartass aims to make sustainable household essentials accessible to everyone, removing any plastic, carbon and hassle involved. Nature called, we answered.
